Measure around the widest part of the head and match it to the chart. A junior and adult rugby headgear sizing guide with real measurements and fit checks.
Measure around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and ears, and match it to the chart below. That is the whole method. Headgear that fits does its job; headgear that slides around does not, no matter what it cost.
Rugby headgear size chart (junior and adult)
| Size | Head circumference | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 50 to 54cm | Most juniors and younger players |
| Medium | 54 to 58cm | Older juniors and most adults |
| Large | 58 to 62cm | Larger adult fit |
The same chart covers rugby league and rugby union. There is no separate "kids headgear" sizing system; a junior simply lands lower on the chart. Most kids under about 12 measure into a Small, but heads vary more than ages do, so measure rather than guess.
How to measure your head for headgear
Use a soft tape measure, or a piece of string you then lay against a ruler.
- Wrap it around the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and the tops of the ears.
- Keep it level and snug, not tight.
- Take the number in centimetres and check it against the chart.

What a proper fit feels like
A good fit sits level on the head, covers the ears fully, and stays put when the player shakes their head hard. Snug without pressing. If it leaves a red line across the forehead it is too tight. If it rotates when you twist it with one hand, it is too loose, and it will slide exactly when it should not.
Between sizes? Size up
Size up and use the adjustable chin strap to fine-tune the fit. A slightly roomy cap that the strap holds in place beats a tight one that gives the player a headache by half-time.
Should you buy a size up for a growing kid?
One size at most, and only if the chin strap can take up the slack now. Headgear that is two sizes too big will not protect the ears properly this season, which defeats the point of buying it. GearFit headgear is priced so replacing it when they grow does not hurt.
Why fit matters more than anything else
Headgear provides coverage around the ears and helps protect against cuts and abrasions. It only does that if it stays where it should through tackles, rucks and contact training. Fit is not a comfort detail. It is the difference between headgear that works and headgear that gets in the way. And to be clear, no headgear prevents concussion at any size; if you want the full honest picture, read our guide on what headgear actually protects against.
