How to wash rugby headgear and grip socks the right way, cold hand wash, no heat, no softener, so the grip and fit last the whole season.
Hand wash rugby headgear in cold water with a mild detergent, rinse it after every sweaty session, and air dry it in the shade. Wash grip socks cold and inside out, skip the fabric softener, and keep both well away from the dryer. That is the whole system. Everything below is the why, plus the mistakes that quietly wreck good gear.
How do you wash rugby headgear?
Five minutes, four steps:
- Rinse first. Run it under cold water to flush out sweat and dirt before they set.
- Hand wash cold. A sink of cold water, a small amount of mild detergent, and a gentle squeeze through the padding. No bleach, ever.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Detergent left in the foam irritates skin and holds odour.
- Press, do not wring. Squeeze the water out between your hands, then air dry it in the shade with the chin strap undone.
Do this after games and hard contact sessions, and give it a quick fresh-water rinse after everything else. Sweat is the thing that ages headgear fastest between washes.
Can rugby headgear go in the washing machine?
We do not recommend it. Padded headgear is shaped foam, and machine agitation plus spin is how foam creases, seams stress and straps tangle. The hand wash above takes five minutes and treats the padding the way it needs to be treated. A $49.45 cap that is hand washed will outlive a machine-washed one comfortably.
What wrecks headgear fastest?
Heat. The dryer, a radiator, the rear window of the car, a summer afternoon in direct sun. Foam padding is the working part of headgear, and heat breaks it down, softening and warping it until the fit changes and the padding stops doing its job. Bleach and harsh detergents do slower versions of the same damage to the fabric and stitching.
The other killer is storage: a wet cap zipped into a kit bag until Thursday training. Always dry it fully in open air first.
How do you get the smell out of rugby headgear?
Start with the rinse habit, because odour is mostly old sweat that never left. For a cap that already smells, soak it for half an hour in cold water with a splash of white vinegar, then do the normal hand wash and rinse. Dry it completely, in moving air if you can. And retire the kit-bag storage habit; a dry cap hanging on a hook does not smell.
How do you wash grip socks?
Grip socks handle the machine, with three rules:
- Cold wash, inside out. Cold protects the grip pads; inside out protects them from the rest of the load.
- No fabric softener. Softener leaves a coating on the pads, and coated pads stop gripping. This is the single most common way good grip socks go slippery.
- Air dry, no dryer. Heat degrades the grip pads the same way it degrades headgear foam.
Treated like this, a $29 pair of GearFit grip socks should see out a season of weekly footy and training with the grip intact.
Does washing ruin the grip on grip socks?
Cold washing does not; heat and softener do. If a pair has lost grip, the usual suspects are a hot wash, a trip through the dryer, or softener build-up. Pads that are worn smooth from a season of use are a different story: that is the sock telling you it has done its job and it is time for a fresh pair.
When should you replace headgear or grip socks?
Replace headgear when the foam stays compressed or cracked, when the chin strap no longer holds a snug fit, or when a junior has grown out of it and it no longer covers the ears fully. Headgear only helps protect against cuts and abrasions while it fits and the padding is doing its job. Our sizing guide covers how to check fit on a growing head.
Replace grip socks when the pads are worn smooth or the knit has gone thin underfoot. If you are replacing both at once, orders over $120 ship free, which covers a new cap and a few pairs of socks in one go.
Common questions
Can you tumble dry grip socks or headgear?
No. Dryer heat breaks down grip pads and foam padding, and it is the fastest way to shorten the life of both. Air dry everything, in the shade.
How often should you wash headgear?
Full hand wash after games and hard contact sessions, quick cold rinse after everything else, and completely dry before it goes back in the bag.
Can you use fabric softener on grip socks?
No. Softener coats the grip pads and stops them gripping the boot. Detergent only, cold wash.
Is it normal for headgear to smell after a season?
It is common, and it is preventable. Rinse after every session, dry in open air rather than the kit bag, and use a cold vinegar-water soak when it needs a reset.
